The” Minimalist Milkmaid” Dress Is Set To Be The Style Of The Summer

April 9, 2024

” There is nothing new except what has been forgotten”, Marie Antoinette’s designer, Rose Bertin, is said to have told her. Nearly 300 years after, the sentiment remains as real as ever. Consider this season’s: while’ 90s- inspired, expansive styles may have been at the forefront of fashion’s social consciousness over the last few years ( no doubt thanks to the lingering desire for comfort, post- lockdown ), it seems as though a new – or should we declare “forgotten” – silhouette has been making its presence felt both on and off the runways. And it just so happens that the costume in question has an Antoinette-esque quality.

16Arlington spring /summer 2024.

With its dropped waist, bustle- like gathering on the hips, waist- inspired bust and austere fabric, this dress is an unexpected hybrid: a sort of minimalist A- line meets boyish “milkmaid” style. 16Arlington led the way with a display- stopping, fall- waist cotton dress on its catwalk, a piece which has since been worn by Alexa Chung never again, but twice, in two different fabrications. Talk about a seal of approval.

It will come as no surprise, perhaps, that Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood also placed his bets on the hip- highlighting silhouette. In the brand’s spring /summer 2024 show, we witnessed Irina Shayk sashay down the runway in a dramatic, off- white silk number, which was styled with bow- adorned flats and embellished circular sunnies. It managed to be extroverted and sophisticated at the same time.
