YARMOUTH, N.S. — The lobby of in Yarmouth will be the venue for ‘The Dress Paintings’ exhibit for the month of April.

“The show came about when I completed a series of six dress paintings, one of which was a commission piece from a 1960 wedding dress,” explains artist Joanna Gilman Hyde.

“I went on to paint The Witch Dress Painting, The Devil Dress Painting and The Angel Dress Painting,” she explains. “Two earlier dress paintings incorporating prom dresses will be shown, along with 10 earlier garment-related pieces showing expressions of painterly handling in my own unique style.”

The exhibit runs from April 2 to April 30.

Gilman Hyde says making these paintings was “exciting.”

“Especially when I incorporated the found objects of chainsaw blades as necklaces,” she says, noting Michael MacDonald made a documentary of her process for Eastlink Magazine, a show on Eastlink Cable, that aired in January of this year.

Asked what she hopes is the takeaway for those who visit her exhibit, she says this.

“What I hope my audience takes from my show is an appreciation for a new genre of work using found objects and ordinary female garments in a never-been-seen-before arrangement of painterly positioning, creating unique and decorative pieces which make statements about form, colour, and femininity.”
