In order to produce six raucous looks that balance brashness and elegance, we took inspiration from the Van Noten elegance playbook for our December issue story. We combined clashing colors with strong textures. Eva Wang, a Paris-based photographer, captured these “impossible combinations” in her personal high-gloss style, such as electronic pink lipstick smeared on eyelids or an old-fashioned bordeaux-colored shade lined with an intense shock of shimmering gold.

Lilac makeup applied with a measured mess beyond the door or lip colors that gently peek outside the mouth series are examples of how Dries Van Noten Beauty’s playful spirit permeated the makeup application. The same is true of fashion, as portrayed by Wallpaper’s fashion director Jason Hughes, in which 1980s vivacity is channeled through the use of painted Barbie-pink lips, a gold foil turtleneck, or an furry pastel pink coat that contrasts with mud green eyes.

The best kind of beauty is caroline laide, or as Van Noten himself puts it, “what is wonderful for me may be very unpleasant for you, and evil opposite.” Something that many people consider to be wonderful, in my opinion, is boring. I enjoy working with disparities a lot because of this. I enjoy having a peculiar quality to my charm.
