The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York did honor” Sleeping Beauties” on May 1st of the following year at its yearly, star-studded Met Gala, a fundraiser for the Mask Institute.
The faculty’s flower 2024 show,” Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” which is not about fairy tales but rather about using technologies and conservation to revive worn-out clothing, is connected to the concept.
Expect great style, yes—specifically, 250 of the collection’s clothing and accessories—as well as augmented reality, artificial intelligence, computer-generated imagery, x-rays, video animation, and light projection. Also soundscapes will be present, mimicking the soft rustling of used fabrics.
According to Met director Max Hollein,” The Met’s modern flower 2024 Costume Institute show will push the limits of our thoughts and encourage us to experience the multisensory parts of a cloth, many of which get lost when entered as an object.” By evoking how they feel, move, sound, scent, and interact when worn, Sleeping Beauties will enhance our engagement with these works of fashion and finally provide a deeper appreciation of the integrity, beauty and visual brilliance of their works on display.
The Met all too well knew when Kim Kardashian arrived at the university’s 2022 dinner wearing the legendary nude dress Marilyn Monroe serenaded President John F. Kennedy in at Madison Square Garden in 1962 that continuing to wear historically significant clothes can get contentious.
The introduction of Kardashian’s red carpet garnered media attention, but it also infuriated many members of the curatorial and fashion conservatory communities. As a result, the International Council of Museums condemned Kardashian, and in response to the outcry, it established its own garments preservation committee. ( Despite Ripley’s Believe It or Not, the reality star is thought to have harmed the delicate dress! The Orlando Museum, which is the owner of the item, has denied it.
Therefore, wearing these outdated looks wo n’t be the focus of the upcoming show; in fact, some of them are too delicate to be worn as mannequins. ( Those will be on display in crystal graves and are the so-called” Sleeping Beauties.”
The reputation of a piece of clothing changes permanently when it joins our series. What was once an essential component of a woman’s lived experience is now an immobile piece of “artifact” that cannot be worn, heard, touched, or smelled, according to Costume Institute director Andrew Bolton. Through a variety of technologies, the exhibition aims to resurrect these works of art by reawakening their sensory faculties and providing visitors with sensory “access” to rare historical clothing and dense contemporary fashions.
The Met’s monthly fashion show is a resounding hit, and last month the museum revealed plans to convert its gift shop in the Great Hall into an additional Costume Institute gallery. The$ 50 million project is expected to be finished in 2026.
The hosts of the exhibition’s visit game have not yet been revealed by The Met, but TikTok and the upscale clothing store Loewe, run by designer Jonathan Anderson, are sponsoring the event.
On May 10–September 2, 2024,” Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” will be on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, located at 1000 5th Avenue in New York.
