Ralph Lauren launches its first Artist in Residence collaboration

December 5, 2023

In an exciting new move for the much-loved American brand, Ralph Lauren today launches its Artist in Residence programme, which invites artisans working with a variety of skillsets and mediums to collaborate with the label’s creative teams.

The first artist in residence, presenting the inaugural collection under the new initiative, is Naiomi Glasses, a seventh generation Diné (Navajo) textile artist, designer and model. Intentionally focused on the celebration and preservation of heritage craft, the Artist in Residence scheme is part of the Ralph Lauren’s broader efforts to not just be inspired by communities, but to collaborate with them, too.

“Heritage and tradition are at the centre of everything I love – things that encompass both beauty and utility, that are uncontrived and personal and are passed down for generations,” says Ralph Lauren, whose brand has been inspired by the lands, cultures and artistry of America for more than 56 years. “Bringing the most authentic expression of heritage craft to life means working with those who have created and sustained these timeless traditions for centuries and sharing their stories with the world.”

The Polo Ralph Lauren x Naiomi Glasses collection will be unveiled in three seasonal, special-edition launches throughout 2024, all of which celebrate the timeless artistry of Navajo traditions. The first capsule, which launches on 5 December 2023 online and in select stores, includes 32 pieces of men’s, women’s and unisex clothes, with standout designs ranging from woven jacquard blanket coats to beautifully crafted knits, with contemporary adaptations of cherished Navajo symbols incorporated throughout the collection. Also featured is an assortment of velvet tops, timeless layering pieces and classic Ralph Lauren silhouettes like the iconic polo shirt and baseball cap.

Glasses, an avid turquoise and silver collector, has also curated a unique selection of handcrafted silver and turquoise jewellery from seven Navajo and Hopi artisan families, showcased throughout the campaign and available for purchase online and in select flagship stores.

“Navajo weaving is a craft that has carried on through my family for seven generations and preserving these traditions in new ways has been so inspiring to me as an artist,” says Glasses. “To now be able to share it with people around the world, as seen through my eyes and brought to life in clothing, is a dream come true.”
