NMU clothing swap is example of students helping students

October 16, 2023

It’s always a positive thing to witness young people giving back to the community in one way or another.

That’s what was going on recently when a Northern Michigan University student-lead organization known as EcoReps staged a clothing swap.

The swap — so far, they have been held once per semester — was a free event Jamrich Hall, said said EcoReps sustainable fashion intern Miki Rogers.

Anyone could take what they wanted or leave clothes they no longer had use for. Participants who took clothes were not required to donate some in exchange, but encouraged to do so.

“Having clothing swaps like this really helps to divert waste from the landfill because a lot of clothes that are donated to big chains like Goodwill don’t always make it into the store,” Rogers said. “By having clothing swaps, we’re putting donated clothes out here first for students … and that way we can keep clothes from entering a landfill. Any clothes that are left at the end of the swap are donated to the women’s shelter and … campus programs like the Career Closet.”

This is an outstanding program that has no downsides that we can see.

Want to get involved through a clothing donation? EcoReps will be holding clothing swaps more frequently in the semesters to come, we’re told. For more information about donation or pickup, email [email protected].
