A Kelowna-based apparel company has made it its mission to educate people about mental health.
Austin Penrose and Mahlon Head founded Friends of Felix in 2022. Brain and Penrose aimed to create clothing that would spark discussions about mental health.
Mental health was kind of a big thing that does n’t get talked about, especially with young men or young boys in locker rooms and stuff, because both of us grew up in sports backgrounds, according to Penrose.
The Friends of Felix clothes line features phrases like” contact us if you get lost,”” a gentle reminder,” and “mental wellness club.”
According to Penrose,” We developed the company as a means of bridging the gap between those uncomfortable conversations that they might not be able to facilitate.”

Friends of Felix donates 10 % of its money to HeadsUpGuys, a mental health nonprofit out of UBC Vancouver that offers online sources and assists people in finding solutions locally. The business, according to Penrose, is proud of its monetary contributions, but the main objective is to foster communication.

Penrose claimed that the most enjoyable aspect of starting the business has been being able to connect with customers in person.

At the end of 2023 and early 2024, the company intends to introduce a new range of styles, but Penrose wants to expand the business beyond only clothes.
” We do n’t really know how that would appear just yet. We want to make events easier, give speeches at universities, educate a younger audience about emotional health, and ultimately gain more recognition than just being an ethical clothing company, he said.
