Green and blue are the new colors for Alicent Hightower ( Olivia Cooke ).

In Season 1, the green blaze House Hightower lamps in Oldtown are referenced as” s princess wife,” which means” s princess wife” all the way back in Season 1. Since then, the color green became synonymous not just with Alicent, but with her son Aegon II Targaryen ( Tom Glynn-Carney ) and his supporters.

But, Alicent alters issues in Season 2’s final two episodes. On her, she wears a black blue-green cape over a lighter blue dress. The show goes even further by adding a simple color change to her usual attire, which is just one more indication of her shifting loyalties to Team Green. The meaning is clear when Alicent removes her outer pieces before swimming in a river in a plain white gown. Useless, undermined, and unable to prevent the folly of battle, Alicent is giving up the work she’s spent her entire existence upholding.

When she travels to Dragonstone to propose a bold new plan to end the war, she tells her old friend and royal adversary Rhaenyra Targaryen ( Emma D’Arcy ) as much as she does when she tells her old friend. As soon as her son, Prince Regent Aemond ( Ewan Mitchell ), flies off to the Riverlands, Alicent says, she will surrender King’s Landing to Rhaenyra, the named heir to the Iron Throne. She asks for permission to leave her daughter, Queen Helaena ( Phia Saban ), so that they can lead the kind of burdened lives they never had the freedom to do.

The whole image is a House of the Dragon show, down to the sorrowful moment when Alicent agrees to give up Aegon’s life in exchange for Rhaenyra’s success. However, the picture even follows Alicent’s telling style journey from what we saw in show 7. Here, Alicent’s full clothing is a light blue — no traces of natural here! Any references to the Faith of the Seven, another important component of Alicent’s centers demeanor, are also absent. Jany Temimes ‘ choice of visual elements helps to highlight how much Alicent has changed throughout the time: she’s actually ready to give up her position and power.

But why gentle blue, particularly? Could n’t House of the Dragon have picked any color to show Alicent’s shift away from her old ways? In principle, yes. Nevertheless, light blue actually holds a precise meaning for Alicent and Rhaenyra’s marriage in House of the Dragon, making it the perfect option for Alicent’s last change.

In” House of the Dragon,” Alicent and Rhaenyra’s marriage in particular takes on a new significance.

In the very first episode of House of the Dragon, when young Rhaenyra ( Milly Alcock ) and Alicent ( Emily Carey ) are at their closest, Alicent wears a light blue dress. Eventually, as things start to get worse between the two, we see Alicent wearing a darker orange clothing and Stark red and gold. That second light blue dress, which has undergone so many changes, continues to be the mask that most evokes the romance Rhaenyra and Alicent have for each other.

In an effort to honor their long-standing friendship and file for justice, Alicent sends Rhaenyra a page from a story book in the same way. Importantly, it’s also the gown she’s wearing. That action seems to be Alicent’s activities in the movie, where she once more rely on her connection to Rhaenyra to halt more violence. Just this day, Alicent is trying to work with Rhaenyra, instead of against her.

In the Season 2 finale of House of the Dragon, Alicent’s light orange clothing and blanket recall that Season 1 outfit and all that comes with it. But they also point to Alicent’s state of mind moving ahead. If she truly wants to live as herself, without the niceties of work that were thrust upon her as a child, does n’t a return to her young, pre-queen state seem like the best place to start? ( A pivotal moment in Alicent’s conversation with Rhaenyra, a devastating retort to young Alicent’s concern for her nails, is also a witness. )

But Alicent does n’t just want to free herself. She also wants to free Rhaenyra, begging her to” come with me” in what has to be one the most ( doomed ) romantic moments of the season. Rhaenyra, for her part, is unable to move, trapped as she is under the mass of combat and. However, Alicent’s runaway proposal does n’t seem as unappealing to her as Criston Cole’s ( Fabien Frankel ) back in Season 1. Perhaps Rhaenyra wants to travel back in time to the time when she and Alicent sat together under the Red Stay weirwood trees, talking about history and cakes without fear of war, or getting married to your best friend’s father. We’ll be certain if Rhaenyra always exchanges her black clothes for her Season 1 gold if Alicent switches to a new light blue look.
