We did n’t need proof that has gone too far, but here it is anyway: In a viral TikTok video, a mom of two is sharing her story about being dress coded by her local librarian for her “inappropriate” outfit.
In the film, Hilary Flips is wearing the costume in problem. You’ll notice that the piece of high-waist jeans and a matching camisole are all that is a pair of white, animal print cardigan.
” I only got gown- coded at our local libraries at Baby Story Time”, she says. ” This is what I wore: a little cropped shirt situation. It’s from, like, the girl part at Target. It’s that, like, strange Wild Fable product. Perhaps not age- appropriate, whichever. These clothes — they’re Up baby clothes, a thousand years old. They’re actually called, like, the mother jean. This is what I wore. I thought, why not a shirt? It’s, like, a step away from my usual sweater, T- clothing, leggings, jeans scenario. So I was feeling great about myself, and she ruined that”.
We’ll only say that Flips looks adorable after a moment of silence. This costume is not in any way bad. Sure, carry on.
In the movie, she goes on to explain what happened: Her children, who are both fresh, have trouble sitting through story day. So when the teacher approached her afterwards and inquired if she was their mother or babysitter, she concluded that it was about their behavior.
” She goes,’ You should know better’ in this judgey, tsk- sigh sort of voice. And so I began to express my regret for my female ‘ actions right away. I’m like,’ I’m so sorry, you know, it’s truly hard for them to remain however, like, we’re working on it, like, that’s kind of why we come these,'” Turns said. ” And she goes,’ No, your clothing,’ and I’m thinking,’ Oh my gosh, enjoy, what did I never switch my sweater away? Like what’s happening?’ And she just motions to it, and I realize it’s because it’s a little bit cropped, and when I carry my big one- year- ancient, it raises away and shows sometimes, like, one inch of my mommy belly with its sweet little stretched out belly button”.
Oh, God forbid.
Turns ends her film by saying, sarcastically,” Obviously it’s improper to show any belly when you’re edging into 40, and newsflash, I guess, I disagree”.
But do we! And so does her opinion area.
” That is stupid. This irritates me as someone who works in a public libraries. But uncalled for and totally unnecessary. Your clothing is very adorable!”! one commenter wrote.
Another added,” You look great! That’s crazy, she would n’t even speak to you. I do n’t know if there is even a real dress code. Keep swinging because you look good in crop tops and high-waist jeans.
For everyone who’s wondering, no — books do not have dress code. All visitors are welcome in these places, and they can bring whatever they like.
