As the weather turns colder, area residents have started breaking out their winter clothes, but some may struggle to stay up to date on fashion.

Kristy Eubanks, owner of Junie’s Closet, said that when it comes to the colder or transitional months, layers are always critical for fashion.

“I find that a solid base layer, like a fitted tee or a bodysuit, is perfect to begin with, and fashion tops tend to bunch up under layers,” Eubanks said.

Eubanks said that after this base is established, an individual can throw on a second layer, such as a sweater or flannel shirt. A vest or shacket can also be added, with the final touch being the person’s favorite coat.

Another way to stay warm, while simultaneously staying within popular styles, is by purchasing coordinating sets. Eubanks said those can be worn together, or they can be broken up. This allows for multiple styles to be incorporated, which won’t limit the person to only a few outfits.

A variation on making several outfits out of a few pieces of apparel can be accomplished with vests or other items that are reversible.

“This is such a beautiful concept because you can get multiple looks with one garment,” Eubanks said.

Beautiquey and the Beast Manager Diana Gordineer said since various colors and patterns are popular right now, there are not really any shades to avoid this season. When it comes to mixing and matching colors, Gordineer said, it depends on the hues when it comes to making a good match.

“For the most part, everyone is mixing and matching, especially this time of year,” Gordineer said. “Everybody is playing with colors and making it more fun and adventurous. Things are a lot more bold.”

Gordineer said coats and jackets, such as with the Ciao Milano brand, should not make a piece of attire that is “just there”; it should be an extension of the outfit.

“The coats we offer are kind of an extension of what you are wearing,” Gordineer said. “It’s not just outer wear that you put on and kind of feel like a burden. It adds something to the outfit.”

When it comes to scarves, Gordineer said, people are often trying to find accessories that not only keep them warm, but are made out of a lighter material.

For those who are worried about making their own fashion statements, Eubanks cited a trend called “dopamine dressing.” She added that people should wear whatever makes them feel their best.

“The rule of thumb is, ‘If it feels good, do it,'” Eubanks said.
